Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is highly infectious with a long incubation period, and generally susceptible to the population, which poses a great threat to the life and health of people all over the world. At present, the combination of traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine and dialectical treatment for COVID-19 obtained the significant clinical efficacy in China, which once again highlights the important role of Chinese medicine in the prevention and treatment of epidemics(infectious diseases).Pharmacological experiments and clinical practice have proved that verbena officinalis L.has immunoregulation,anti-inflammatory,antiviral and antitussive effects, and definite curative efficacy on hypoimmunity, pneumonia, chronic prostatitis, and other inflammations, such as low immune function, pneumonia, chronic prostatitis and viral herpes, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.In this paper,we summarized the pharmacodynamic substances, pharmacological effects and clinical applications of verbena officinalis L.based on the literatures, and discussed the possible mechanism of verbena officinalis L.in preventing and treating COVID-19 from multiple angles so as to provide a reference for clinical prevention and treatment of COVID-19 and subsequent research and development of related drugs.
