The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)and its associated disease,coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),have been causing enormous human casualties and serious economic losses posing global threat.Establishment of effective herd immunity in a nation or a region to contain the SARS-CoV-2’s spread is an urgent necessity.Here,we explain the basic concepts of herd immunity and discuss the establishment of herd immunity for the SARS-CoV-2 through natural infection and vaccine inoculation.
