Charles Beard is one of the most famous and important American historians in the 20 th century.As a representative figure of progressive historiography,his view of economic history not only had a profound impact on the development of American historiography,but also on the American society and progressive movement of that time.Beard’s view of economic history was born during his early study in England when was the flourishing time of the socialist ideological trend.Marx’s historical materialism and Fabian Society’s socialist theory had great influence on him,thus forming his distinctive historical view and academic thought.This also made Beard,both in thought and practice,develop more distinct socialist and critical spirit in the later American progressive movement.
