Thinking about the modern economic history of Japan-some personal observations on the English language scholarship

本文旨在就日本前现代以及现代经济史文献发表一些个人观点,并且致力于将文献限定在经济史的学科范畴内。本文考虑以下几个方面的问题:定量与定性研究方法的使用,日本与全球史的整合,关于前现代与现代历史时期的争论,意识形态与理论框架的作用,以及制度与文化的相关问题。我们认为经济史应该继续保持其跨学科以及多学科的性质。

This paper offers some personal comments on the English—language scholarship on the economic history of early modern and modern Japan,and seeks to locate that scholarship within debates in the broader economic history scholarship.A number of issues are considered:the use of quantitative and qualitative methodologies;integrating Japan into global history;debates over the relationship between the early modern and modern periods;the role of ideological and theoretical frameworks;and issues relating to institutions and culture.I argue that economic history needs to remain both interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary.
