The previous research on“Nyokei Kazoku”to some extent touched upon female issues, but the textual analysis primarily focused on character delineation and examination of the features of the family system, lacking a structural analysis of the underlying causes of the“Matriarchal family”and the power dynamics between men and women. This paper examines the gaze strategy employed in power discourse in Toyoko Yamazaki’s novel Nyokei Kazoku.By analyzing the complicit relationships formed by Yoshisaburo Umemura,Ryokichi Hatanaka,Uichi Ono,and the three Yajima sisters,it reveals that even women who appear to hold a dominant position in gender relations are still confi ned within the framework of patriarchal thinking and ultimately become“tamed bodies”.Yamazaki’s internalization and parody of the male gaze device constitute a“symptomatic”writing, which exposes the fragility and hypocrisy of the“Matriarchal family”system and reveals the fact that the root of this system is still patriarchy.
