Paul Guyer discusses his personal aesthetic history through the concept of aesthetic history research and his own artistic experience.Guyer first enumerates the different definitions of"Aesthetics"in history,and then tries to determine what objects can be studied within the broader definition of aesthetics and what issues should be discussed in contemporary aesthetics.Guyer believed that aesthetic history should first focus on the source of aesthetic value and oppose the single source attribution.By enumerating the different evaluations of Cézanne by Clive Bell,Collingwood and Merleau-Ponty,Guyer explores the diverse sources of aesthetic value in the light of his own artistic experience,and emphasizes the equal importance of each source of value.
