Discussion on the Mission of Chinese Culture in Contemporary Times

中华文化的当代使命是创造新的文化形态,实现中华文化的伟大复兴;创造社会主义工业文明,促进人的自由全面发展;创造新的天人关系,引领文化全球化,建设社会主义文化强国。中华文化的新形态必须在马克思主义的指导下,融合中华传统文化、西方文化的优秀方面,世界各民族创造的优秀文化也要成为中华文化的组成部分。中华文化创造的社会主义工业文明是没有压迫、没有剥削、人人平等、人人自由的工业文明,是赋予人民新的文化生命、促进人的自由全面发展的工业文明。天人关系即天文与人文的关系,必须转变为科学与人文的关系。天文与人文的关系是农业文明的核心,科学与人文的关系是工业文明的核心。创造新的天人关系,必须赋予科学深厚的人文精神,赋予人民新的文化生命。

The mission of Chinese culture in contemporary times is to create new cultural forms to realize the great rejuvenation of Chinese culture,develop socialist industrial civilization to promote man’s free and all-round development and forge a new heaven-man relationship to lead cultural globalization and build a socialist cultural power. The new forms of Chinese culture should be developed under the guidance of Marxism,absorbing the fine aspects of traditional Chinese and western culture,as well as the splendid cultures created by various nations as cultural genes. The socialist industrial civilization created by Chinese culture is devoid of oppression and exploitation and in pursuit of equality and freedom,one that endows its people with a new cultural life and promotes their free and all-round development. The heaven-man relationship,namely,the relationship between astronomy and humanism,must be transformed into that between science and humanism.The astronomy-humanism relationship is the core toagricultural civilization,just as sciencehumanism relationship is to industrial civilization. To forge a new heaven-man relationship,profound humanism must be given to science and a new cultural life to the people.
