What is tragedy? The answer to this question cannot be obtained without resorting to value judgement.Generally speaking, only destruction of high value can provoke in its audience such tragic emotions as terror, pity, regret or indignance. This is also why tragedy as a form of art has attracted much critical attention in the past.Another relevant point is that tragedy often occurs not because of ill fate or evil deeds but because positive values themselves can sometimes generate conflicts between their upholders.A comprehensive understanding of the nature of tragic art, therefore,is predicated on our recognition of the close relationship between tragedy and value.
