The book Marxist Aesthetics:The Foundations within Everyday Life for an Emancipated Consciousness was first published in 1984.In response to Perry Anderson’s view that the Marxist turn to aesthetics was a product of the failed proletarian revolution after World War I.Pauline Jonson,in her Considerations on Western Marxism, argues that Anderson underestimates the profound significance of Marxist aesthetics in the expression of socialist social goals and the emancipation of alienated individuals. The various Marxist aesthetic theories of the emancipatory impulse of the work of art collectively ask how to find a practical basis for a change of consciousness in alienated everyday life. This, precisely,is what constitutes the tradition in Marxist aesthetics. In 2011,the book was revised and republished, and its discussions of"everyday life.""aesthetic needs"and"emancipation of consciousness"have provided a unique perspective for the aesthetic discussions in China in the 1980 s.The discussions of theoretical and practical possibilities are still important for contemporary Marxist aesthetics research.
