土坯在今北方部分地区称作“胡墼”,非外来之物,“胡”也不是“土”字匣母模韵读音的保留。“胡”当训大,“胡墼”为偏正式复合词,指大土坯或大土块。“墼”的本义为“土坯”,《汉语大字典》等大型语文辞书以“砖”为本义,未能厘清本义和引申义的关系,亦当补未收的“土块”义。

Adobe is called Huji(胡墼)in some parts of northern China.It is not a foreign thing,and hu(胡)is not the retention of the rhyme pronunciation of Xia(匣)Mu(模)Rhyme of tu(土).Hu(胡)should be interpreted as big,Huji(胡墼)is a partial formal compound word,which refers to large adobe or large clods.The original meaning of ji(墼)is adobe,the Great Chinese Dictionary and other large Chinese dictionaries take brick as the original meaning,but fail to clarify the relationship between the original meaning and extended meaning,it should also fill the uncollected clod meaning.
