Francesco Petrarch's work How A Ruler Ought to Govern His State was dedicated to his final patron,the lord of Padua,Francesco il Vecchio da Carrara.The letter treats the general duties of a ruler and details of the practical rulership.Emphasizing the standard of political virtues,Petrarch urges the ruler to consider hospitality,benevolence and generosity as noble merits and qualities a Signore might have.Along with his own political ideal and goal,Petrarch drew an ideal city-state for the Carrara lord.
