Yasmina Reza is a French dramatist,novelist and actress. Art is one of her representative plays. The play is about one man named Serge,who buys a painting,and the reactions of his friends,Marc and Yvan,to his purchase. Taking Aristotle's concept of character friendship as a starting point, the author emphasizes the importance of art to friendship by analyzing the reasons for the tension between Serge,Marc and Yvan caused by the painting. According to Aristotle,a friend’s character and values will reflect your character and values. A friend is your"other self". Serge and Marc have different views on the painting,that is to say,they have different tastes in art and do not have shared sensibility,which shows that they are no longer "other selves",thus threatening their friendship. At the same time,the parallel disconnects in their senses of humor is another reason for the tension between them.
