Social ontology is an inquiry into the ontological foundations of the social world itself,as a means of constructing a rational explanation of the social world and its phenomena. An existential interpretation of social ontology is also implicit in Heidegger's philosophy. This paper examines how early Heidegger integrated sociality into his foundational existentialism:firstly,it analyses Heidegger's ambiguous conception of the'common world'(Mitwelt),which switches back and forth between defining the social world as a physical realm and a representational dimension.Secondly,it is pointed out that Heidegger, after realising this, changed the term'common world'to'Mitsein',thus giving sociality an existential a priori status and avoiding the confusion between the representational model and the inner world entity. Finally, the analysis of the relationship between the'common being'and the world suggests that the object of Heidegger's social ontology is the phenomenon of the world itself and the way it is shared, thus providing a new interpretation of the encounter between the self and the other.
