At the end of the 19th century,a group of sinologists in China had a heated discussion about A Manual of Chinese Quotations,the English translation of You Xue Qiong Lin by J.H.Stewart Lockhart(1893),which involved a series of issues such as transliteration,annotation,manuscripts and mistranslation.This article centers on the foci of this controversy concerning translation criticism,analyzes the reasons for the huge disputes among critics on the translation quality,summarizes the characteristics of this controversy,and then reveals the significance of the controversy for the study of translation criticism.This controversy reflects a sound translation criticism mechanism that had been established in the field of Sinology at the end of the 19th century,and the mutual promotion of translation criticism and academic research.It also reveals points worthy of reflection in some aspects such as the relationship between the critic and the translator,the critical dimension,and the qualifications of the critic.
