“死”与“活”:沙博理红色文学作品题名英译研究

Shapiro’s English Translation of Titles of Chinese Literary Works and Its Enlightenment

本文探究了沙博理红色文学作品题名的英译方法,发现沙博理以再现原作主旨为目标,采用直译法、意译法和重命名法,产出既忠实于原作主题思想又易于目的语读者理解的译名。对沙博理红色文学题名英译方法的探究可为中国红色文学题名的英译提供启示,即译者可灵活采用直译、意译或重命名的方法,但应把握这三种方法的主次与尺度。具体而言,应以直译为先,意译次之,重命名又次之;直译需锤炼词语,意译需恰到好处,重命名须不逾原作之矩。

This paper probes into methods Shapiro adopts in translating the titles of Chinese red literary works and finds out that taking the reproduction of the original’s substance as the goal,Shapiro renders Chinese titles into English faithfully and expressively by adopting flexibly such translation methods as literal translation,liberal translation and re-entitling.Exploration into Shapiro’s title translation methods could provide the following enlightenment for English translation of titles of Chinese red literary works.Literal translation,liberal translation and re-entitling could be adopted in a prioritized and balanced way.To be specific,priority should be given to literal translation,liberal translation comes second and re-entitling last,and the employment of literal translation should focus on the polish of language,that of liberal translation be just perfect and that of en-titling be within the essence of the original.
