This article provides an overview of pre-medieval Jewish engagement with medicine, and presents the current state of the research into ancient Jewish medical knowledge in an attempt to show how ancient Jewish traditions, especially the rabbinic compilations of the late antiquity, accumulated, appropriated, and produced knowledge about physiology, anatomy, therapies, remedies, and healthy lifestyles. This information, although generally scattered throughout a large textual corpus, forms often more coherent frameworks, clusters and lists that exhibit elaborated medical discussions, well integrated in their multi-layered epistemic contexts.
