Does “Co-competition” Among Third-party Payment Institutions Improve Bank Performance

以中国银行业为研究对象,基于BankFocus数据库2013~2019年数据,通过构建多期双重差分模型,研究金融科技情境下,与第三方支付机构竞合对商业银行财务绩效和创新绩效的影响,实证研究发现,在财务绩效方面,竞合显著提升了银行的财务绩效,且对于不同类型银行均有显著提升作用;在创新绩效方面,股份制银行竞合对创新绩效具有显著正向作用,而非股份制银行竞合没有显著作用。进一步动态效应检验发现,竞合对银行财务绩效的提升具有长期持续性,而对滞后期创新绩效的影响不显著。研究结论支持了竞合对绩效的积极作用,能够为商业银行正确选择竞合策略、提升绩效提供有益支持。

Using the Chinese banking industry as a sample,this study investigated the impact of co-competition among third-party payment institutions on the financial performance and innovation performance of commercial banks against the backdrop of financial technology based on data drawn from the BankFocus database from 2013 to 2019.A difference-in-differences model with multiple time periods was constructed for the analysis.The following results were obtained.On the one hand,co-competition improves the financial performance of banks considerably and has a significant effect on improving the financial performance of different types of banks.On the other hand,the implementation of the co-competition strategy has a significant positive effect on improving the innovation performance of joint-stock banks but has no significant effect on improving the innovation performance of non-joint-stock banks.After examining its dynamic effects,this study found that co-competition has a long-term,sustainable effect on the financial performance of banks but has no significant effect on the innovation performance of banks in the lag period.The conclusions drawn in this study support the positive role of co-competition in performance and can assist commercial banks in correctly selecting the co-competition strategy and improving performance.
