论及信仰,中国人多言"天"与"天道",西方人则言"God"与"神意"。一般印象中,两者是截然不同的信仰。无论国人还是西方宗教史家皆以"天/帝"和祖先崇拜为中国原始宗教的主要内容。中国人讲天,意蕴丰富。

In discussing belief,Chinese people often speak of“Tian/heaven”and“Way of Tian/heaven,”while westerners“God”and“divine will.”①The general impression conveyed is that these two are completely different beliefs.Chinese and Western historians of religion both regard“Tian/the ruler of Tian”and ancestor worship as the main elements of China’s primitive religions.
