Codex Carolinus is a collection of papal letters which was ordered by Charlemagne to collect and organize in 791,it contains about one hundred letters sent to the Carolingian court by several Popes from 739 to 791,it’s main content is very rich.As a relatively rare collection of letters in the study of medieval history, for a long time, scholars usually take the objectivity of historical materials as the standard to differentiate and analyze whether the contents in Codex Carolinus are true or not,and the examination of its textual characteristics is slightly insufficient. In the complex military and political situation of the 8th century, the popes used a variety of writing skills in their letters to persuade the rulers of Caroline in order to obtain military assistance from the Frankish kingdom. And a deep analysis of these writing skills will not only help to fully understand the long and tortuous process of the establishment of the Frankish-Papal Alliance, but will also promote the scholars’understanding and use of the Codex Carolinus.
