Early Commercial Press and the Missionary Publishing Enterprise in Shanghai:A Discussion Based on the Records of The Chinese Recorder

《教务杂志》是美国在华各新教差会传教士合作编辑出版的英文杂志,该杂志的固定栏目"Our Book Table"旨在介绍一些在编者看来较具代表性的中英文书籍。这些书籍或在英美出版,或由在华各差会出版机构出版。商务印书馆创办后,其出版物陆续进入《教务杂志》编者的视野。差会出版界视商务为可合作的同道。从出版物的类型及倾向来看,商务与美华书馆等传教士出版机构既有渊源,又有不同。商务偏重文化教育普及,对学校教材尤为用力;传教士出版则兼顾世俗文教和宣教。上海地区的出版机构有差会系统和本土系统之别,商务印书馆是脱胎于差会出版的本土出版。商务的崛起,标志着差会出版的世俗化和中国化进程进入新的阶段。

"Our Book Table"was a fixed column of The Chinese Recorder,an English magazine published in China by American protestant missionaries.Various Chinese or English books that published by Britain and American publishing houses or missionary societies were introduced by the Journal’s editors in above column.As soon as the establishment of the Commercial Press,its publications had successively attracted the attention of The Chinese Recorder’s editors.Missionaries regards C.P.as a cooperating partner.In a sense,C.P.originated the missionaries’publishing enterprise,which including the American Presbyterian Mission Press when we judging from the type and inclination of their publications.C.P.focused on the general education,especially school textbooks,while missionaries focused both on secular and religious topics.There were two kinds of publishing systems in Shanghai,one of missionaries,another of natives.As a native press,C.P.grew out of the missionary press.The rise of it marked a new stage in the process of the secularization and Sinicization of missionary publishing enterprise.
