Thomas Merton’s Response to Vatican Ⅱ based on His Thought of Monastic Renewal

The VaticanⅡ(1962-1965)opens a new age due to its influence on every aspects of Catholic life.Thomas Merton(1915-1968)just right experienced and witnessed the great change over the VaticanⅡ.As a famous monk and writer,Merton understood the council that had an impact on monasticism because it broke down the old and ossified system and tried to establish or clarify new meanings of monastic life.This article explores Merton’s thought on monastic renewal by reading his books written in 1960 s.It attempts to argue that besides the"conventionalism"before Vatican II and the modern progressive renewal after Vatican II,Merton tried to go in the middle way of"ressourcement".
