A Brief Chronology of Shen Jianshi

沈兼士(1887-1947年),原籍浙江归安(今属湖州市),生于陕西汉阴。早年留学日本,入东京物理学校读书。留日期间,曾随章太炎受业,主攻语言文字学。归国后,先后在北京大学、北京师范大学、厦门大学、北京辅仁大学等校任教,曾任北京大学研究所国学门主任、故宫博物院文献馆馆长、辅仁大学文学院院长,著述颇丰。沈氏所处时代正是清末至民国的特殊历史时期,社会政治的剧烈变革对其思想、心理、性格及学术的影响极大,且因交游广阔,师友、学生众多,对其思想和著述的形成也有不可忽视的作用。根据沈氏亲友口述历史、友朋往来书札和日记、档案资料,以及史书、方志、家谱等,大致描绘出谱主一生的行状。

Shen Jianshi(1887—1947),originally from Gui’an,Zhejiang Province(today’s Huzhou City),was born in Hanyin,Shaanxi Province.In his early years,he studied abroad in Japan and entered Tokyo Physics School.During his stay in Japan,he was taught by Zhang Taiyan,majoring in language and philology.After returning to China,he successively taught at Peking University,Beijing Normal University,Xiamen University,and Beijing Furen University and other universities.He was the director of Sinology Department of Peking University Research Institute,the curator of literature museum of the Palace Museum,and the dean of the School of Arts of Furen University.He has written many books.Shen lived in a special historical period from the end of Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China.The drastic social and political changes had a great impact on his thoughts,psychology,character and academic studies.Besides,because of his extensive contacts,numerous teachers,friends and students,they also played a significant role in the formation of his thoughts and writings.Based on the oral history of Shen’s relatives and friends,letters and diaries,archives,as well as historical books,local Chronicles,genealogy,this paper roughly describes the chronology of Shen’s life.
