Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra appears complicated and trivial, out of which we can extract three major themes of empire, fortune and eros by carefully combing the dramatic clues. The drama shows the final moments of the transformation of the Roman republic into an empire.Love for the master replaces love for Rome, but this love is based on personal interests and can easily turn into flattery or betrayal. The rivalry between Antony and Caesar reflects both the arrangement of fortune and different eroses of the two men:Antony retains the spirit of the republican era, cherishing honor and affection, while Caesar is the new man who loves to rule.Caesar’s victory is based largely on fortune, which suggests some skeptic reservation of Shakespeare towards Caesar.
