“Upper”,“Middle”and“Lower”in the inscriptions on Western Han horse-hoof and qilin-hoof gold ingots probably are abbreviations for“Upper Storeroom”,“Middle Storeroom”and“Lower Storeroom”,organizations established during Han Emperor Wudi’s reign(B.C.95)and thereafter to make and collect vessels. They are inscriptions formed by the production organization in the making and collecting stage.Soldered inscriptions probably symbolize that the products can enter the storerooms.Ingots without any inscription probably are the results of the regulation that not all products(in the production phase),collections(in the collection phase)and articles for use(utility phase)need to be inscribed and that only a few need to be inscribed for each batch. This practice is related to the strictness of officials in carrying out the regulation during each phase.
