An Overview of Moistureproof and Drainage Measures for Medium and Small Han Tombs in the Hunan Region

两汉先民重视丧葬的观念在墓葬的营造过程中得到了很好的体现。即使是中小型墓葬,为了保护棺椁,先民们采用了各种手段保持墓葬的干燥,其中包括了深挖墓坑、夯筑填土、使用木炭膏泥、抬高棺椁、开挖排水沟等措施。在具体的实施过程中采取的方式,随着时代的变化又有所不同。

The concept of the people of the two Han dynasties to attach importance to funerals is well reflected in the construction of tombs.Even for medium and small tombs,in order to protect the coffins,people at the time adopted various measures to keep them dry.These measures include digging deep tomb pits,ramming the ground and filling with earth,using charcoal and paste soil,elevating the coffins and digging drainage ditches.These measures,in actual practice,also varied with the change of time.
