Studying History through Objects:The Military and Political Situation of Hunan behind Tan Yan-Kai’s Disarmament in the First Year of the Republic of China

本文对湖南博物院收藏的五件“中华民国元年”湖南军政府签发的证明文书(《功牌》《褒状》《给予证》《执照》)进行详细释读,以小见大,聚焦民国元年湖南谭延闿政府的裁军政策,研究裁军的历史背景、过程,客观分析裁军原因及结果,对于认识、理解民国元年湖南政情、军情的发展与演变具有重要意义。

This paper offers detailed interpretation of the five certifying documents(“Military Merit Card”,“Certificate of Merit”,“Granting Certificate”and“License”)issued by the military government of Hunan in“the first year of the Republic of China”collected by the Hunan Museum,focuses on the disarmament policy of Tan Yankai’s government in Hunan during the first year of the Republic of China,studies the historical background and process of the disarmament,and objectively analyzes its reasons and results.It is of great significance to know and understand the development and evolution of Hunan’s political and military situation in the first year of the Republic of China.
