A Brief Discussion of Bast Fiber Fabrics from the Han Tombs at Mawangdui

长沙马王堆汉墓出土的麻织物数量不多但用途较广,或用于缝制殓葬与从葬衣衾,或用于制作冠冕与鞋袜,或用于制作囊袋装盛物品,或用于给夹纻胎漆器、草席与竹笥等作配材,或用作边饰或绦带,甚至还用作随葬小木俑的衣着等等。分析这些用途不同的麻织物,可以找到某些特定的丧葬意义。这是当时人们将麻织物所具有的某种特性延展显性用途,赋予隐性意义,来作为随葬之物使用的。

Though of limited number,bast fiber fabrics from the Han tombs at Mawangdui show a wide range of uses.They were used to make clothes for the deceased and for burial purpose,to make official hats,shoes and socks,to make pouches for containing objects,to serve as accessory for making lacquer vessels with layered hemp base,straw mats and bamboo chests,to make hems and braids,and even to make clothes for the small wooden figurines in the tombs.An analysis of these bast fiber fabrics for different uses can help us to find some specific funerary significance.This means people at the time endowed some hidden implied meanings to bast fiber fabrics by extending certain property to explicit application when they used them as burial objects.
