何炳棣与加拿大不列颠哥伦比亚大学的汉学发展

Ping-ti Ho and the Development of Sinology in University of British Columbia,Canada

本文对著名汉学家、美籍华人何炳棣在加拿大不列颠哥伦比亚大学(UBC)工作15年的汉学贡献和他与UBC的关系进行了系统梳理与研究。何炳棣是UBC汉学研究的重要建设者、发展者。他在UBC所进行的汉学课程设计、汉籍购入,尤其是蒲坂藏书的购入,以及他本人突出的汉学研究成果,为UBC成为北美汉学研究重镇做了基础性工作。UBC历史系是何炳棣从事汉学研究的第一个重要学术平台,对他个人的汉学研究发展起了重要的促进作用。尽管何炳棣对UBC表现出矛盾情绪,但是,不能否认的是何炳棣与UBC之间是互相成就的关系。

This paper makes a systematic study on the contribution of Pint-ti Ho,a famous sinologist and Chinese American,to sinology and his relationship with University of British Columbia(UBC),Canada.Ping-ti Ho is an important builder and developer of UBC sinology.His sinology curriculum design,acquisition of Chinese books,especially the acquisition of Pupan Collection,and his outstanding sinology research achievements at UBC have done basic work for UBC to become an important sinology research center in North America.The Department of History in UBC is the first important academic platform for Ping-it Ho to engage in sinology research,which has greatly promoted his sinology research.Although Ping-ti Ho shows ambivalence towards UBC,it is undeniable that Ping-ti Ho and UBC supplemented to each other.
