加拿大不列颠哥伦比亚大学汉学研究的缘起

The Origin of Chinese Studies at UBC

加拿大不列颠哥伦比亚大学是北美汉学研究重镇。本文主要依据英文档案史料探寻该校汉学研究的发端和缘起。地处加拿大的亚太门户城市温哥华,这里不仅气候宜人,有北美较大的华人聚居区,而且交通便利。该校汉学研究的起步与发展虽然较晚,但是占尽天时、地利、人和的因素。作者遵循历史脉络,以亚洲研究系的建立和蒲坂图书的入藏为节点,探究了早期汉学家的历史贡献。他们不仅推动了西方汉学研究的发展,也为中国争取到加国人民的理解与支持,为中加文化交流贡献卓著。

The University of British Columbia(UBC)is a center of Chinese Studies in North America.This paper explores the origin of its Chinese Studies mainly based on archival and historical materials in English.Located in the Asian-Pacific gateway city,Vancouver BC Canada,UBC is at a large Chinese Settlement area with convenient transportation and pleasant climate.The timing,geographic and social conditions are all favorable to the origin of its Chinese Studies in the 1940's,even though it came to a late start.The contributions of some pioneer sinologists are introduced in chronological order and around the acquisition of Puban Collection as well as the founding of the Department of Asian Studies.They have not only paved the way to and promoted Chinese studies in the West,but also helped Canadians to understand and support the Chinese People.
