Koolaids is the first novel written by American Lebanese writer Rabih Alameddine.Depicted as the central image of the novel,“paintings”linearly outline the protagonist’s experiences in three stages, which are his childhood exposure to wars, youth exile in the United States, and middle-aged HIV infection. These experiences respectively represent the protagonist’s objectified identity of being suppressed by the mainstream culture conspired by Israel and Lebanon, otherized identity of being discriminated by white Americans, and marginalized identity of being excluded as a homosexual from American society.“Paintings”in the novel reveal the protagonist’s tragic fate and criticize white-centrism and hegemony which are represented by the United States.
