The majority of studies on Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road takes“things”as symbols of crisis,be it environmental, human survival,or ethical, with little attention paid to the active role of“things”in these crises. This paper, focusing on the“sense of things”,aims to explore how the withdrawal, disappearance, and interaction of things lead to the protagonists'sensory chaos, disorder and rupture, and how the telling of the sensory crisis contributes to the post-apocalyptic scene where all things are disconnected.By immersing the readers into such a scene,McCarthy is able to make them experience the precarious relationships between human beings and all things, and then better grasp his philosophical viewpoint of post-humanist ecology, one in which all things are interconnected and interdependent.
