Some American cities have initiated expressway demolition projects since 1970s.Freeway construction has adversely affected the central city, and even caused highway revolts during the building process. Therefore, some cities choose to demolish the structure when some of their highways are approaching the end of their lifespans,or the road structure is aging or damaged, and the main purpose is to create additional space for urban redevelopment. Those early expressway demolitions mostly came as the legacy of highway revolts in the 1960s.The highway sections demolished are mainly elevated structures, especially those cut through the urban center. The completed cases have played an exemplary role and cities are increasingly discussing and planning freeway rermoval projects.Expressway demolition is in line with the concept of the New Urbanism, some freeway teardown projects even get financial support from the US Department of Transportation.
