According to Plato’s Republic, size of city-states should not be exceedingly big. Otherwise they may fail at keeping themselves together. However, Plato had Socrates lay out a claim about "Greeks shouldn’t fight Greeks" in a seemingly offhand conversation from section 469B to 471C, offering a benign and orderly picture of Greek commonwealth and a fresh mode of thinking that transcends the vision of city-states. Why does Plato think that a "well-governed city-state" should ultimately transcend itself to become a guardian for the cultural community that is Greece? This narrative rises above the parochial view of city-state politics, and keeps distance from the universalist logic of later empires. Plato’s vision is a process of natural transition based on "emotions", a constant enlargement of a community of kinship and friendship.
