镇江凭依江河交汇的便捷交通与地处江南丘陵的优越地理环境,在明清时期已从军政要地转变为区域性的交通枢纽和商业重镇。进入晚清之后,镇江的开埠把该地区拖入近代化大潮,近代航运业的发展把镇江的商埠地位推向顶峰,而铁路的修建则成为这一趋势的转折。交通近代化的不同阶段奠定了镇江商业起落的基调。

Zhenjiang,based on the convenient transportation of the intersection of the river and the superior geographical environment located in the hills of the south of the Yangtze River,has changed from a military and political important place to a regional transportation hub and a commercial town in the Ming and Qing dynasties.After entering the late Qing Dynasty,the opening of Zhenjiang port dragged the region into the tide of modernization.The development of modern shipping industry pushed Zhenjiang’s commercial port status to the peak,and the construction of railway became the turning point of this trend.The different stages of traffic modernization set the tone of Zhenjiang commercial rise and fall.
