An Interpretation of Reality and Illusion in Haruki Murakami’s Novel South of the Border West of the Sun

村上春树作品的特色之一就是创造一个虚幻世界与现实世界进行对照,从而揭示现实世界的真实本质。《国境以南太阳以西》描绘了主人公初君的妻子有纪子所代表的现实世界以及情人岛本所代表的虚幻世界,通过对初君在两个世界游走、最终回到现实世界的描述,探讨了20世纪80年代末泡沫经济时期日本雅皮所面临的中年危机这一时代主题。

One of the characteristics of Haruki Murakami’s works is to create an illusory world to contrast with the real world,thereby revealing the true nature of the latter one.The novel South of the Border West of the Sun depicts the real world represented by the protagonist Hajime’s wife,Yukiko,and the illusory world represented by his lover Shimamoto.He wanders through these two worlds and finally returns to the real one.The book explores the theme of the times,i.e.midlife crisis,faced by Japanese Yuppie in the bubble economy of the late1980 s.
