The International Labor Organization's requirements for ship lighting are continually increasing. The ILO's Maritime Labor Convention(MLC)grants comprehensive labor rights and protections to seafarers worldwide. The new MLC Convention aims to safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of seafarers, providing specific regulations for the ship’s-built environment, especially in terms of living conditions, sanitary facilities, lighting, noise, and temperature levels. These heightened requirements necessitate new design considerations to improve the living quality of seafarer’s onboard ships. To meet these new requirements in design, the study introduces human factors engineering into ship lighting design.Currently, circadian lighting is a key research focus in human-centric lighting for ship electrical lighting design. This study investigates the application of circadian lighting in the lighting design of a 1370-passenger ro-ro ship.Through design research and modeling simulation based on ergonomics, the study analyzes the impact of lighting environments on human circadian rhythms, ultimately developing a lighting design plan for advanced passenger ships that aligns with human factors engineering principles.
