In this article the relationship between oboo cairns and environmental issues in Northern Asia is explored. We argue that oboo worship lie at the intersection of emic ecological knowledge, political narratives and adaptation to climate change. After outlining the way local populations interact with the deities inhabiting the natural environment, the article describes the way environmental degradation has affected people and their economies. It then shows that oboo became major sites for both local and national authorities in terms of conveying a political discourse on environmental preservation. Finally, the article analyses how locals have adapted oboo ritual content in order to face climate change.
