谁在塑造中国?——澳大利亚公众中国观发展轨迹(1949~1972)

Who Was Constructing the Image of China?—The Trajectory of Australian Public􀆳s Way of Seeing China(1949-1972)

随着中澳关系的日益稳定与密切,了解澳大利亚人眼中的中国成为非常迫切的任务。澳大利亚人的中国观对中澳关系产生了久远、深刻的影响,在中澳交往的历史中,一直存在着褒贬对立的中国观,澳大利亚中国观的发展轨迹受到国际因素、两国关系、澳大利亚自我认识等多方面因素的综合影响。1949年至1972年,中国形象在很大程度上受到了意识形态的影响,而中华人民共和国初建的现实情况也未能被真实地展现给澳大利亚民众,因此,这个阶段澳大利亚的中国观充斥着偏见和夸张。鉴于中国观的塑造过程生动地反映了两国的互动过程,以澳大利亚为例解读西方人眼中的中国有助于中国了解自身形象的塑造和传播。

There are numerous articles dealing with Americans’way of seeing China but very limited number of them on Australians’way of seeing China.With the increasingly stable and close relationship between China and Australia,it has become an urgent and inevitable task for us to know how Australians view China.Australians’way of seeing China exerts a crucial and lasting impact on the China-Australia relationships.During the interactive history of the two countries,there has always been the dichotomy of"good China"and"bad China".The development trajectory of Australians’way of seeing China has beenimpacted by world pattern,bilateral relationships,self-perception of Australia and other factors.From 1949 to 1972,the China image was to a large extend impacted by ideology,and the reality in the People’s Republic of China was not faithfully communicated to the Australian public.Therefore,the China image during that period was overwhelmed by bias and hyperbole.The molding of the way of seeing China reflects the interaction between the two countries,so the study on Australians’way of seeing China is beneficial to China’s understanding of the molding and spreading of its own image.
