During the Edo period, the Japanese government restricted all private overseas trade to Nagasaki,in Kyushu, and the only countries allowed were China and the Netherlands. At the time, all merchant ships travelling to Nagasaki from the Jiangnan region were collectively referred to as Nanjing junks. In reality,Nanjing junks did not depart from present-day Nanjing. After the Qing reopening of the seas in 1684,almost all of them departed from the estuary of the Yangzi River in Shanghai. This article examines the trade between Shanghai and Nagasaki during the early Qing Dynasty.
