Charlotte Turner Smith has been a forgotten name for around two hundred years. Not until the last three decades did she enjoy a critical renaissance. Most scholars both at home and abroad tend to classify her as a British Romantic poet, focusing on her connections with as well as differences from the canonical British Romantic poets, whereas a few scholars approach her as a Neoclassical poet.Regrettably few have paid sufficient attention to the unique poetics of her as a poet living in the transitioning period from the Neoclassical to the Romantic period.By locating her poetry and poetics in the transitioning period, this paper attempts to discover the neglected aspect of her poetics, including lyrical mode, perception of imagination and of sublimity, all of which are important concepts of poetics during that transitioning period.
