In 1917,at the beginning of his career in Peking University,Ma Heng(1881-1955)gathered his precious Fanjiang Studio(Fanjiang zhai)collection of oracle bone rubbings and bound them into one volume for friends and acquaintances for the purpose of facilitating academic research. In 1922,on behalf of the University’s National Learning Department(guoxue men),Ma Heng accepted oracle bones donated by Huo Baolu, the owner of the Dagu Studio(Dagu zhai). The four-volume rubbings produced out of this donation were later combined with the previous one volume, collectively known as Rubbings of Oracle Bones(Jiagu keci taben).Copies were distributed to various institutions and individuals.Yet,the exact number of either the oracle bones or their respective rubbings in both the University and Ma Heng’s private collection varies as quoted by different sources. This article surveys the past and present of the Rubbings of Oracle Bones.
