As a book officially compiled in large scale during the Wuzhou period,Poets and Scholars of Three Teachings is not very innovative in content.Compiled mostly by literary scholars,this book shows a tendency of gamification in its compilation process.These characteristics,to a certain extent,are a reflection of Empress Wu Zetian’s sense of hedonism and game mentality appearing in her later years.In this state of mind,the compilation project generally lacks a serious sense of mission and a strong academic atmosphere.A large number of specialized literary people gathered together,talking about literature and writing poems from morning till night,which provided a more relaxed environment for their literary innovation and theoretical discussion.The poetry theories of Li Qiao,Cui Rong and others and the innovative features in The Collection of Poets and Scholars are closely related to the compilation of this kind of books.
