Paul's Areopagus Speech in the Interpretation of the Greek Church Fathers

本文旨在讨论并不为人所熟知的希腊教父对《使徒行传》中的名篇“保罗亚略巴古演讲”的阐释.与当代主流阐释不同的是,希腊教父从未提及路加此处有意将保罗塑造为苏格拉底,也没有引用大量斯多亚哲学作品为该段经文做注.对他们而言,异教哲学对圣经阐释并非必要,教父们更多的是注重强调两约神学主题上的一致与互证.而且,教父们先于当代学者千余年就已注意到了《使徒行传》中保罗因人而异、“处境化”的传教策略.希腊教父对这段经文的解读有助于我们反思当下的主流研究,更多关注新旧约的神学统一.

This paper aims to explore the little known biblical interpretations of Greek Church Fathers of St.Paul's famous Areopagus Speech in the Acts of the Apostles.In contrast to the mainstream modern approach,the Greek Church Fathers neither mention that Luke deliberately portrayed Paul as Socrates in this speech,nor do they use Stoic philosophical works,as most modern scholars do,to interpret this passage.For the Greek Church Fathers,secular Greek philosophy is not necessary for biblical interpretation,instead,they lay more emphasis on the theological integrity and consistency between the Old and New Testaments.A thousand years earlier than modern scholars,the Greek Church Fathers had already noticed the so-called“contextualized”strategy of preaching of Paul in Acts before different audiences.At least for this biblical passage,the interpretations of the Greek Church Fathers can help us to reconsider the approach of much current biblical scholarship and give us new insight into the theological integrity of the Old and New Testaments.
