In the development process of high-density cities,promoting a compact intensive city,enhancing efficient use of land,and creating a vital environment with convenient motorized transportation and pedestrian-friendly systems will be a long-term target,for which,three-dimensional cities will play an important role.The paper begins with a review of four clues of urban form which appeared in the evolution and development of global city construction,and then analyzes the motivation and pedigree of three-dimensional city development,and different identities as well.Finally,it tries to sort out the development characteristics and developing trends of contemporary high-density three-dimensional cities in China.
