A Criticism and Testimony of the Starting Conjunction Qie(■/且)at the Beginning of Sentences in Bronze Inscriptions in Western Zhou Dynasty

對於西周金文句首的"■",學術界有"動詞説""時間詞説""嘆詞説"諸説,本文一一予以辨析,最後證明西周金文句首的"■",當讀爲"且",其功能與傳世文獻的提起連詞相同."■(且)"作爲提起連詞用法有二:(一)用在引語或篇章首句的開頭以發端;(二)用在篇章中句子的開頭,承上文補充説明具體情況、原因或條件.

As for Qie(■)at the beginning of sentences in Bronze Inscriptions in Western Zhou Dynasty,there are verb-hypothesis,time-word-hypothesis and interjection-hypothesis in academic circles.This paper criticizes them one by one.At last it is testified that the word Qie(■)—which should be loaned for Qie(且)—works as same as a starting conjunction in Chinese classics.There are two usages of Qie(■/且)as a starting conjunction—One is used at the beginning of the first sentence of quotations or other paragraphs to make a start of texts.The other is used at the beginning of sentences inside texts to have continuity to supplement concrete facts,causes or conditions.
