《红楼梦》被认为是中国传统文化的百科全书,作者在这部巨著中大量采用具有中国传统文化特色的习语,包括成语、俗语、谚语、歇后语等,使作品更具民族性和艺术感染力.习语具有丰富的文化内涵,体现了不同民族在地理、历史、风俗习惯等存在的差异.笔者将以杨宪益及大卫霍克斯译本中的习语翻译对比为例,探讨习语翻译所体现的中西文化差异,并揭示这些文化差异对翻译的指导作用.
A Dream of Red Mansions is acclaimed to have topped all the other novels in the history of Chinese literature.It is regar?ded as an encyclopedia of Chinese feudal society and immortal masterpiece for the literature values of the high level use of language.It covers nearly all the cultural aspects of Chinese society including social orders,political system,cultural values,social conventions,religion,family life,architecture and medicine.All of them are expressed through the artistic description,in which there are lots of vivid and cultural-loaded Chinese idioms.These idioms also have become the key to the translation of this novel.
