BACKGROUND: For a long time, the researchers have thought that skeletal muscles are simply sport organs. However, it is discovered that the massive interleukin-6 is generated from the skeletal muscles during exercise. As the cytokine produced in exercise, interleukin-6 displays some effects on body metabolism, inflammation and diseases. OBJECTIVE: To primarily explore the biology of muscle-derived interleukin-6 by summarizing the related oversea researches. RETRIEVE STRATEGY: The relevant English articles dated between January 1991 and December 2005 were searched in Medline with the

LITERATURE EVALUATION: The articles about the study on the influence of muscle-derived interleukin-6 on body metabolism and health were collected. Finally 31 articles were selected, mainly the clinical experiments besides few basic studies. DATA SYNTHESIS: ①The previous researchers thought that the skeletal muscles were simply sport organs. However, it is discovered that interleukin-6 is generated from skeletal muscles during exercise. ②As a cytokine producing during exercise, interleukin-6 could regulate body condition by influencing glycogen and fat metabolism and inflammation, and accordingly display good effect on the diseases such as diabetes. ③It is also discovered that regular exercise can reduce the level of interleukin-6, but in the diseases such as diabetes the level of interleukin-6 increased markedly. So we can suppose that intake of interleukin-6 maybe cure the diseases such as diabetes, and it is a possible field to treat metabolic disorder diseases. CONCLUSION: It has been demonstrated that regular exercise is beneficial to health. As a cytokine producing during exercise, interleukin-6 mediates the body function through regulating glycogen metabolism and fat metabolism and inhibiting inflammation. The study on the mechanism of interleukin-6 may help to find out the mechanism of some metabolic diseases and evaluate the effect of exercise.
