The contribution of Xiru Ermuzi to the history of dictionaries' compiling

本文旨在从以下几方面探求《西儒耳目资》一书在辞书编纂史上的贡献:首先,是书第一次将汉字用西方字母进行了拼音化处理;其次,是书对汉字部首进行了远较中国人为彻底的形式化改造;最后,也是更重要的一点,是书第一次打通了中国传统的字书与韵书的界限,将二者的长处融会在一书中。当然,是书也存在着缺点,如没有释义;但这是与其作为识字课本的性质相适应的。

In this thesis, the author studies the contribution of Xiru Ermuzi to the history of dictionaries' compiling. The foremost of all is, in this book, Chinese characters had been firstly in the history transformed into phonetic alphabet; Secondly, in this book, the radicals had been thoroughly reformed toward formalization; Last but not unimportant, in this book, the boundary line between the dictionary compiled by the structure of Chinese characters and the dictionary compiled by pronunciation had been bored through. Of course, there is shortcoming in this book, such as being short of explanation of the characters' meaning.
