Burke's Expounding of the Sublime and Beauty

伯克在西方美学史上首次将崇高与美两大美学范畴严格区别开来,全面、系统、深入地阐明了两者的特点。其独创性贡献在于:从人的情欲出发,探讨了崇高感与美感的不同心理生理基础,指出它们分别源于自我保存与社会交往两种本能情感;从感觉论和经验论出发,归纳出崇高与美的对象在感性形式上的迥异特征;从诗与画在物质手段、形象表现和审美效果上的差异比较中,论述了诗表现崇高与美的特点,从而在西方关于崇高与美两个范畴的比较研究中起到承前启后的作用。

It was Burke who first distinguish between the sublime and beauty.He also expounded the characteristics of the two categories systematically and profounally.His creative idea lies in that he discussed the different psychological and physiological bases for the sublime and beauty,pointed out that they originated respectively from self-protection and social communication,summarized the different features of the objects of the two categories in perceptual forms and analyzed the characteristics of the the sublime and beauty from the comparison of material means,image performance and appreciation result of the beauty between the poems and drawings.He,in fact,acted as the bridge in the comparative study of the two categories in the west.
