This paper attempts to apply functionalist translation theories, particularly Halliday's discourse analysis,to translation practice. The paper also makes an attempt to input functional element into traditional translation procedures "to comprehend-to express-to revise"; the new three-step process of translation may be summarized as "intention, equivalent and evaluation".
